Minecraft servers shutting down?

Minecraft won't be closing its servers on December 21, 2020, despite what the internet might have said.

The rumor seems to have come from Channel45news.com, a prank website that published a "story" which was picked up by a major search engine. It promoted the story alongside legitimate outlets in its news feed. Channel45news.com is a site that allows you to create headlines of your choice. This headline was: "Minecraft will close their servers in late 2020."

Helen Zbihlyj, Microsoft's community manager, tweeted Thursday to clarify the rumors. "Minecraft is not stopping, Mojang IS NOT closing," Polygon also reached out to Microsoft.

The "news story" was circulated on Twitter around December 30, and the prank seemed to have appeared there. Once you click on the link, it becomes obvious Channel45news has been set up as a prank site. A banner appears on the screen that reads "You've Been Pranked!" However, the headline, which is coupled with the URL for the "news" page, may not have appeared convincing to some. The story quickly spread to social media thanks to this.

Despite this hoax, Minecraft is still one of the most important and popular games of the past 10 years. It seems there will be no stopping it as it enters the next decade. The last major update was just weeks ago.
